Streaming wars spill into CES 2020 as media nabs the spotlight

id=”article-body” class=”row” section=”article-body”> CES officially kicks off Tuesday.

Getty Images This story is part of CES 2020, our complete coverage of the showroom floor and the hottest new tech gadgets around. Every year, CES draws the tech-obsessed to gawk at fancy televisions and off-the-wall gadgets. This year, though, the conference’s long-running media sideshow is flooding onto the main stage, including two keynotes by companies vying to shape the future of TV.

Media companies and marketers long have fueled a show-behind-the-show at CES, one that has little to do with the next hot doodad. The mobs of media folks in Las Vegas may never even make it over to any of the big show floors. Instead, 카지노사이트 they’re squirreled away in hotel suite meetings or mingling at panels and parties around the Aria Resort & Casino, the epicenter of CES’ media confab sometimes referred to as Tech South.

Meanwhile, companies seem to be rushing toward a convergence of tech and media.

On one hand, 우리카지노계열 tech giants are pouring resources into becoming media heavyweights. That goes for stalwarts like Netflix, estimated to have unleashed a $15 billion budget for programming last year, as well as relative newcomers to video like Apple, which launched its Apple TV Plus in November on the back of a reported $6 billion budget to rope in some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. And AT&T’s $85 billion takeover of HBO-owner Time Warner — now WarnerMedia — finally made it into the clear last year.

On the other hand, traditional media players are arming themselves with tech firepower like never before. Disney launched its Netflix competitor, Disney Plus, in November, a culmination of its $71 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox last year and of years spent reorienting the entire company around the service. And 카지노사이트 Comcast’s NBCUniversal is waiting in the wings to follow suit with its own streaming service, called Peacock, early this year.

CES 2017 brought the unveiling of Hulu’s live-television streaming subscription, and 2016 was marked by Netflix’s keynote reveal that it launched worldwide except in China. What does CES 2020 have in store? Here’s a peek at the media presence in Vegas this year.

Streaming wars at CES

The streaming wars are pitting a raft of new streaming services against each other, and they’re all launching within about seven months of each other. The outcomes of these skirmishes will shape the future of television — and affect how much you pay to watch your favorite shows and movies. Apple and Disney were first to enter the fray in November, and three more companies are launching their competitors, backed by billions of dollars in investment, in the first few months of 2020.

And all three of them are presenting at CES this year.

The first is probably one most people have never heard of: Quibi, 우리카지노 which has even morphed its Twitter name to “WTFisQuibi” in recent weeks. Backed by every major Hollywood studio, Quibi is being touted as a star-studded mobile subscription service for short-form video — “quick bites,” or quibis, as the company has dubbed them.

Quibi boasts an eye-popping slate of talent. Among traditional Hollywood stars, Quibi has lined up Dwayne Johnson, Chrissy Teigen, Kevin Hart, Jennifer Lopez, Idris Elba, Zac Efron, Tina Fey and husband-and-wife combo Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner (but on different shows) — as well as a dizzying number of others. Steven Spielberg, J.J. Abrams, Guillermo del Toro and Ridley Scott are all contributing series. Plus, Quibi has recruited popular online celebs like Liza Koshy, Shan Boodram and Rachel Hollis.

Now playing: Watch this: CES 2020 preview: Surprise booths, slim screens and smart… 2:56 The company has stayed mum about the talent it’ll be bringing to the CES stage. But Quibi’s CES keynote is shaping up to be the service’s big public unveiling ahead of its April 6 launch, so your safest bet in Vegas next week will probably be that Quibi tries to blow away the trade show with celebrity wattage.

So far, Quibi has said the service will cost $8 a month for ad-free memberships or $5 for monthly subscriptions that also run ads. The keynote will be Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. PT in the Park Theater, led by Quibi founder and Hollywood mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg and Quibi CEO Meg Whitman, the former chief of eBay and Hewlett-Packard.

Katzenberg hasn’t been shy about Quibi’s ambition, saying the service should become as definitive for short video as Google is to search. “Five years from now … if we got this right, there will have been the era of movies, the era of television and the era of Quibi,” he said at SXSW in March.

The second combatant in the streaming wars to take the main CES stage is Comcast’s NBCUniversal, which will also launch Peacock in April. Peacock will be leaning into its back catalog of shows like The Office and Parks and Recreation. It hopes to make a reboot of The Office, as well as planned revivals of Battlestar Galactica by Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, Punky Brewster and Saved by the Bell.

But we don’t know nearly as many details about Peacock yet. The service will have a paid subscription and another tier supported by advertising, but it hasn’t specified price yet. We know some of the programming slated for Peacock, but not nearly all. One odd thing about NBCUniversal’s CES keynote: It comes a week before the company will hold a large private event unveiling Peacock in detail.

NBCU’s keynote will also be Wednesday at the Park Theater, but at 4 p.m. PT. Officially titled “If TV Was Invented Today: NBCUniversal Reimagines the Future of Entertainment,” it will be led by the company’s head of advertising and partnerships, Linda Yaccarino, and it will include talent like Mandy Moore, star of NBC’s This is Us, and Terry Crews, host of America’s Got Talent.

Finally, AT&T’s HBO Max will unleash in May with Friends, Big Bang Theory, Game of Thrones and Watchmen plus its own lineup of originals. Though AT&T’s WarnerMedia — the division behind HBO Max — isn’t presenting a keynote, it will make a presentation at the media-focused conference in the Aria on Tuesday at 1:45 p.m. PT. The tech chief of WarnerMedia, Jeremy Legg, and Andy Forssell, the group’s head of direct-to-consumer business (that is, streaming) are set to describe their experiences building a streaming video platform.

Media mavens should also keep their eyes on:

The music front

Streaming music will have a presence at CES this year, too.

Zane Lowe is the creative director of Apple Music.

Getty Images Most notably, Apple is making a rare appearance at CES. While an Apple executive appearing on a CES privacy roundtable has generated a lot of attention, far less notice has been paid to another Apple figure speaking at CES this year. The creative director of Apple Music, Zane Lowe, will participate in a talk Tuesday at 1:15 pm ET at the Aria.

Apple Music launched years after the latest wave of streaming music services already had the momentum to make streaming the main way people listen to music worldwide. But Apple Music quickly became the world’s second most popular music service by subscribers behind only Spotify.

Speaking of the global leader, the company doesn’t have an official presentation at CES. But it will host a happy hour with a panel discussion about the future of podcasts. Spotify has said to expect a news announcement at the event, which will be Tuesday evening ahead of the company’s annual CES party.

And Amazon Music will be trotting out Alicia Keys alongside the service’s head of label relations, Andre Stapleton, and a Grammy-winning mastering and mixing engineer, Emily Lazar. They’re all collected to talk about “the importance of delivering music the ways artists recorded it.” Amazon Music’s panel will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. PT at the Aria.

Not at all coincidently, Amazon launched Amazon Music HD service in September. So another safe bet: Count on lots of cheerleading for that $13-a-month subscription.

AI: Amazon’s answer for everything

id=”article-body” class=”row” section=”article-body”> At Amazon’s re:MARS robotics and AI conference, the humans remain in control, for now.

Ben Fox Rubin/CNET It just so happens that the phrase “turn the lights on” sounds a lot like the word “tenderloin.” That seemingly unimportant phonetic connection became an early challenge for Amazon’s Alexa Shopping team. After all, the world’s largest online store didn’t want to ship its customers surprise packages of meat when all they wanted was to flick on a light switch.

So the company devised a ranking system for its voice commands, placing a request for the lights, which is used a lot, high above a request for tenderloin, which isn’t. To hone this system, the company gave Alexa contextual awareness too, so the voice assistant could tell if a conversation is related to groceries and not smart home controls.

One of Amazon’s new warehouse robot designs, shown at re:MARS.

Ben Fox Rubin/CNET “When we identify that’s the context of your dialogue, we then do the ranking within that context and recognize that the word you actually said was ‘tenderloin,’ ” Chuck Moore, vice president of Alexa Shopping, told me during Amazon’s re:MARS artificial intelligence and robotics conference in Las Vegas earlier this month.

This precise voice-recognition processing is part of Amazon’s push to bring its AI expertise and automation to just about every layer of its business, including its warehouse robots, cashierless retail stores and, of course, Alexa. This behind-the-scenes tech is already providing Amazon’s customers with faster deliveries and helping people streamline their errands, like creating a shopping list or picking up a gallon of milk.

The retail giant is just one of many tech heavy-hitters pouring resources into AI, which allows computers and bots to perform higher-level tasks like decision-making and predicting customers’ needs. Microsoft, Google, Apple and Facebook are also touting how the technology can change and improve our lives.

At re:MARS, CNET spoke to four Amazon executives representing a wide range of its businesses. They provided an exclusive look into some of the inner workings of Amazon’s AI development, showing how the tech has become the critical ingredient they use to compete against rival retailers like Walmart and cloud-service providers like Microsoft and Google.

“[AI] is sprinkled everywhere,” Creative Strategies analyst Carolina Milanesi said after attending re:MARS. “It’s an integral part of every service they offer, every product they make and every business they run.”

We’re not particularly worried about job displacement … We’re growing, we need to hire more people. Brad Porter, Amazon But automation and AI have also become dirty words for plenty of people, with the terms dredging up worries about robots stealing peoples’ jobs. Though automation of tasks has happened for centuries, the rapid development of new technology has the potential to disrupt huge chunks of the economy. Analysts at Oxford Economics now predict up to 20 million global manufacturing jobs could be automated out of existence by 2030. Other studies say tens of millions of US jobs are at high risk, too, particularly low-skill repetitive work like transportation and warehouses.

Amazon executives say they don’t see gloom and doom in AI and automation, noting that they continue to hire thousands more people to work alongside their warehouse bots and to create the latest machine-learning code.

Amazon’s re:MARS conference, which played host to a robot dog, a drone and several human speakers.

Ben Fox Rubin/CNET “We’re not particularly worried about job displacement,” Brad Porter, an Amazon robotics vice president, said. “It’s not, ‘Oh, do we have too many people?’ That’s never the problem we’re trying to solve. We’re growing, we need to hire more people.”

Milanesi noted that the company’s leaders made an effort to talk at the conference about both the benefits of AI and the many potential problems.

“The fact that they are acknowledging that there is complexity that needs to be addressed, and needs to be addressed right, is the critical first step,” she said.

Inside Amazon Go’s AI brain

Onstage in front of thousands of re:MARS attendees at the Aria Resort & Casino, Dilp Kumar, vice president of Amazon Go, showed a bird’s-eye video of what Amazon’s hundreds of AI-infused cameras see in its Go stores.

Dilip Kumar onstage at re:MARS.

Ben Fox Rubin/CNET These convenience stores let customers check in at turnstiles, grab what they want and walk out without having to stop at a register. The cameras perceive the store floor as a jumble of bubbles — each representing a shopper — vibrating and moving around, some of them clumped together.

Amazon relies on AI software to make sense of this information and 우리카지노주소 ensure customers are charged for only what they take out of the store.

Later, in an Aria conference room, Kumar told me the Go store software was fed loads of videos to train it on all kinds of potential situations it may come across. When engineers identified weaknesses in the system, they shot footage of real people at a store performing specific actions, such as two shoppers grabbing for the same product at the same time, then used those images to improve the AI. Kumar’s team added into the mix videos of computer-generated stores and 우리카지노주소 customers, too.

Figuring out what items were picked up was another complicated problem. Potato chip bags are often crumpled, obscuring their labels. Packages of the same brand’s coffee can look nearly identical. Plus, new products get added in all the time, and existing ones get new packaging. Add to that dozens of customers milling around, picking up and moving things, sometimes blocking the view of the Go cameras.

Kumar said his team found that pointing out products’ distinguishing characteristics for the AI didn’t work. For example, telling the machines to check the labels to decipher the difference between raspberry and strawberry jam falls apart pretty quickly.

“As you increase the number of items, or as there are even small changes in packaging, it can just become very brittle,” he said.

How to Fix Slow Games on Facebook

id=”mod_17938766″>There are many reasons for slow-loading games on Facebook. Slow Internet speed, outdated browser or a nagging plug-in can make your games load slowly. And if you have a laptop, then the noise your lappy fan makes while the game loads is proof enough that there are some processes are eating up your CPU power. If you are experiencing dawdling load times, even random crashes, then you should follow these steps to fix slow games on Facebook.

Install Firefox’s Latest Version

I have dabbled with several browsers like Chrome, Maxthon, IE, but I found Firefox perform way better than other browsers, especially when it comes to playing Facebook games. They don’t crash in-between when the game loads. Moreover, the performance is much better in the newest version. Make you download the latest version of Firefox.

Flash 11 Website Screenshot Install the latest version of Flash Player

One of the main reasons for sluggish load times and 카지노사이트 crashes is an outdated Flash plug-in. With every new game released, the technology gets upgraded and substantial improvements are made to give a memorable gaming experience. Moreover, game developers are looking to introduce console-style 3D gaming experience on Facebook.

Your old Flash player might not be compatible with the changes, which means slow load times, glitches and crashes. You must download the latest Flash player (Right now it’s Flash 11) in order to play new visually-demanding games like Hidden Chronicles, Blackwood and Bell Mysteries and future graphic-intensive games.

The latest version supports 3D accelerated rendering, ensuring uncompromised Flash gaming and movie-watching experience. It can be installed in 64-bit versions with ease.

Flash 11 automatically sniffs which OS version (64 or 32) you are using and lets you download the version compatible with your OS.

Uncheck the McAfee Security scan if you don’t want this feature.

Once downloaded, install the player by following the on-screen prompts.

After a few days, the Flash player will ask you for a minor update. Follow the steps (close Firefox browser before doing anything) and update the Flash player.

Now play any games on FB and 카지노사이트 you will find that most slow games on Facebook will load a bit quicker, and most importantly, won’t crash when the game loads.

See results Additional Tips

1.When a Facebook game loads, right-click on the screen and click on Settings. Click on the folder icon (third icon) and move the slider to the extreme right (check out the screenshot to your right). This will allow your PC to store the game’s unlimited data. When the game loads the next time, it will load all data and elements much quicker, thanks to the unlimited setting option.

2. Make sure there aren’t any processors that eat up your laptop/PC speed. Press Shift + Control + Escape keys to open up the Task Manager and end those unwanted processes that you thing hog your CPU. You might also want to try applications like CCleaner to disable unwanted processes if you are afraid of doing it manually.

3. You can try browsers like Maxthon. I have tried this browser and it is pretty impressive, thanks to its nifty turbo mode that ensure quick browsing and faster loading times. You can also separate the Facebook game screen from the browser. But the one drawback is that the browser does update the Flash plug-in after downloading and installing the player. You will have to do it manually.

4. Chrome is also a good web browser, but the current Firefox version is way better. I found all game objects load quickly once I upgraded to the latest Firefox version.

5. Do confirm whether the browser has updated to the latest Flash version. While playing, right-click on the game screen and check the last line, below “Global Settings”.

I have uninstall and install flash latest version, and still can not play games on facebook, I keep having server issues, and crashes. I am recommending that if Mozilla does no want to loose customers there IT department should come up with a step by step instructions on how to correct these issues, for all Microsoft programs.

I will not download the latest foxfire because it is not compatible with my roboform. I have tried it and the games load okay but I still quit Cafe World and left my kitchen full of rotten fish. I can’t play a game with 4 hour time limits that crash every time you pick up a plate…you come back in as fast as you can and all the other ten plates are spoiled. Not to mention the fifty plus five minute burgers I tossed in the trash.

10 Reasons to Use an Online Casino

1- An excellent reason to choose an online casino over a real casino is the fact the there is never a parking problem at an online casino just pull your chair up to your desk and your there.

2- A real good reason for 코인카지노 choosing an online casino is having to decide what to wear and 우리카지노 getting dressed up. At home all you have to wear is your favorite robe, or pajamas, 우리카지노 or maybe just a tee shirt and boxers. Anything you choose to wear is appropriate attire at an online casino.

3- A great reason for playing at an online casino is that you don’t have to have cash to sit and play at an online casino game. You also do not have to worry about insane ATM fees when run out of cash. You also will not have to wait in line at an ATM to get your cash.

4- At an online casino you do not have to worry about having to look out for your chips all the time. With chips you always have to worry about someone grabbing your stack or dropping them and everyone joins in the grabfest to get your chips. You will also never have to worry about your chips rolling under a table or a machine and getting help to get them back at an online casino.

5- When playing at an online casino over priced and watered down drinks are not problems you are going to have to worry about. There is also no expected gratuity from a bored looking cocktail waitress, but if your wife, girlfriend, husband, or boyfriend serves you that drink be gracious and give them a great tip.

6- High priced low quality food is also not a problem you will have to deal with at an online casino. Your kitchen is your restaurant and chances are what you really want to eat is in your kitchen anyway. I am pretty sure that your snacks and meals at home are better than what you would get on a casino floor and once again no waitperson to worry about tipping either.

7- With online gaming the casino is only as far away as the distance from where you are at home to your computer when you decide you want play. All you need is an internet connection and a decent machine to play.

8- Online casinos are always open 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year so you never have to worry about not being able to play.

9- At an online casino when you are done playing you don’t have to make long ride home just shut off your machine and walk away.

10- When you play at an online casino you don’t have to put up with anyone’s bad habits or worry about them complaining about yours.

As you can see there are many good reasons for choosing an online casino over a rea casino and all you have to do is choose which one you want to play at. Also remember to gamble responsibly remember that your gambling money is in your right hand pocket and your important money is in your left hand pocket as the pros say.

8chan owner says site will stay down until he talks with Congress

id=”article-body” class=”row” section=”article-body”> A screenshot from 8chan owner Jim Watkins’ video responding to a shooting in Oslo, Norway.

Jim Watkins/YouTube 8chan owner Jim Watkins uploaded a video to YouTube on Sunday in response to media reports that incorrectly said an alleged gunman, accused of an attempted terrorist attack on a mosque in Norway on Saturday, posted on the message board prior 카지노사이트 to the incident. Watkins says in the video that the image board has been down, 카지노사이트 by choice, for the last week and it wouldn’t be possible to post anything to the site.

“The website has been offline voluntarily for the last week,” he said in the video taken at the Sands Regency Casino Hotel in Reno, Nevada, according to the YouTube description. “It’s really really sad. Please don’t blame me.”

Now playing: Watch this: What might happen to 8chan? (The Daily Charge, 8/7/2019) 6:06 Watkins says he will bring the site back online once he’s talked with “Homeland Security.” He’s likely referring to the House Committee on Homeland Security, which requested he appear in front of Congress to address the proliferation of extremist content on 8chan.

“I want them to understand that we have nothing to do with this crazy violence that’s been happening,” he said. “I want them to understand what’s been going on because it’s obviously a smear by the press.”

A spokesperson for the Committee told CNET they have been in contact with Watkins.

8chan, a site popular with extremists, has been largely offline since Aug. 5 after internet security company Cloudflare and other providers decided to stop working with the site. “They have proven themselves to be lawless, and that lawlessness has caused multiple tragic deaths,” Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince wrote in a blog post on Aug. 5.

The catalyst was a mass shooting that killed 22 people and injured another two dozen at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, on Aug. 3. A hate-filled manifesto from the suspected gunman was published on 8chan just before his attack. At least three gunman have posted manifestos to the site before shooting rampages this year.

On Saturday, a man wearing body armor and a helmet, while carrying two “shotgun-like weapons and pistol,” attempted to fire on a mosque located outside of Oslo. The alleged gunman was stopped by a worshiper, according to The New York Times. When police searched the man’s house after the attempted shooting, they reportedly discovered the body of a dead woman.

It appears the alleged attacker did post messages online prior to the incident, but on a different message board known as EndChan. The board’s Twitter account made a statement confirming that messages, images and a link to a Facebook livestream were posted by someone claiming to be the gunman, which were removed by moderators.

We just confirmed that someone claiming to be the Oslo shooter posted their Facebook stream and imgur links on our user-run politics board (which has denounced violence). Its moderators have deleted the thread. A manifesto was not posted.

— EndChan (@EndChanXYZ) August 12, 2019 The statement across multiple tweets said there had been an influx of users since 8chan’s shutdown. It says that the alleged shooter is “not representative of our regular user base” and that the site has had no similar incidents since it opened in 2015.

8chan administrators didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Instead, they’re squirreled away in hotel suite meetings or mingling at panels and parties around the Aria Resort & Casino, the epicenter of CES’ media confab sometimes referred to as Tech South.

Meanwhile, companies seem to be rushing toward a convergence of tech and media.

On one hand, tech giants are pouring resources into becoming media heavyweights.

And Comcast’s NBCUniversal is waiting in the wings to follow suit with its own streaming service, called Peacock, early this year.

Apple and Disney were first to enter the fray in November, and three more companies are launching their competitors, 우리카지노계열 backed by billions of dollars in investment, in the first few months of 2020.

And all three of them are presenting at CES this year.

The first is probably one most people have never heard of: Quibi, which has even morphed its Twitter name to “WTFisQuibi” in recent weeks.

Robot creator Sam Esmail, 카지노사이트 Punky Brewster and Saved by the Bell.

PT. Officially titled “If TV Was Invented Today: NBCUniversal Reimagines the Future of Entertainment,” it will be led by the company’s head of advertising and 카지노사이트 partnerships, Linda Yaccarino, and it will include talent like Mandy Moore, star of NBC’s This is Us, and Terry Crews, host of America’s Got Talent.

Media mavens should also keep their eyes on:

a Digital Hollywood conference track Monday

a Future of TV Is Now conference track Tuesday, 카지노사이트 as well as one focused on marketing

an Entertainment Summit hosted by Variety on Wednesday
